L'auteur et le metteur en scène: aperçus d'un combat

Résumé

This article is an attempt to re-examine the modern mise-en-scène (as originated in Germany, France and Russia in the late 19th century) from a double point of view: first, by linking it with the recent researches upon theatre life in the 18th-19th centuries; second, by considering the contemporary evolutions of performing arts, with the emergence of “post-dramatic” theatre and “scenic writing”. This broad perspective allows, first, to redefine the specifics of the modern mise-en-scène, and then to underline the complicated relations but also the convergences between playwriting and stage directing during the 20th-21th centuries: for example, the role of modern stage directors in promoting a literary repertoire, their refusal of usual scenic adaptations which denatured non-classical dramas, their attempts in deconstructing traditional text-interpretation, or the similarities between stage actualisation and re-writing of classical myths or repertoire dramas. We can therefore consider contemporary theatre as a whole, a single artistic field where, by different ways, connections between text-dramaturgy and visual dramaturgy are being explored and re-invented.
