Hegemonic Masculinities and “Sexualities” Among Men in Morocco. Between Local Configurations and Globalization of Gender and Sexual Categories
Masculinités hégémoniques et « sexualités » entre hommes au Maroc. Entre configurations locales et globalisation des catégories de genre et de sexualité
Résumé
This article presents an analysis of erotic practices and sexual identities among men in Morocco and their relationship to masculinities. I have found two distinct epistemologies organizing categories that on the one hand define erotic practices – according to a local genealogy – and, on the other, sexual identities in the context of transnational circulations. Erotic practices between men can be described and understood through the homosexuality/heterosexuality dichotomy only for the minority of the Moroccan population that adopts a globalized identitarian epistemology, defined here as the “gender/sexuality system.” Unlike this system, the local epistemology (referred to as the “gender/erotic practices system”) does not conflict with a construction of hegemonic masculinity based on marriage and procreation.
