Résumé

An Interreg program "Cistudes Sans Frontières" ("Cistudes Without Borders") aims to reintroduce the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) in the Upper Rhine region, where it supposedly became extinct at the end of the 19th century. A breeding program coincided with a restoration program of freshwater environments, in the area chosen for the reintroduction: the Woerr (Lauterbourg, France). This area (150 ha) consists of a former gravel pit and several hectares of forests and meadows. Numerous restoration works occurred in this area principally since 2011: softening of the bank slope of the gravel pit and digging of eight ponds. Two of them are acclimatization ponds for the turtles. In this context, our aim was: (i) to monitor the impact of these restoration works on the benthic macro-invertebrate communities; and (ii) to evaluate the possible trophic impact of turtles on these communities. The richness and stability of the macro-invertebrate communities increased in all monitored environments between 2012 and 2015. This increase was partly explained by a progression of the areas colonized by helophytes. Restored ponds with planted vegetation exhibited a higher and quicker progression of their macro-invertebrate diversity. The forest appeared as a limiting factor for the colonization of the ponds found in forested areas, with a limited development of macrophytes and an accumulation of organic matter. A couple of ponds also exhibited limited development of their diversity of macro-invertebrates due to the proliferation of the exotic American crayfish, Orconectes limosus. No trophic impacts of turtles on macro-invertebrate communities were observed.
