Gender, Class and the Internet.

Incorporating masculine, capitalistic and hetero-normative values and norms, the Internet – just like the ordinary world – is a space marked by power relationships. It reproduces the inequalities operating in the offline world and its uses differ according to gender and social class, prolonging the naturalized gender division of traditional activities. The “quality” of these uses generally corresponds to an individual’s position on the social ladder. However, the Internet offers some leeway for negotiating identity, as well as possibilities to subvert dominant gender models. On the other hand, it also reproduces patriarchal mechanisms and gender stereotypes. A divisive technology, the Internet is actually a space that allows social and gender norms to be shifted, and a space that produces and reproduces power relationships.
