Modeling evaluation of the transfer of three metals Zn, Pb and Cd in a carbonated fluvio-glacial deposit

Modélisation du transfert de trois métaux Zn, Pb et Cd dans un dépôt fluvio-glaciaire carbonaté

Résumé

This study can be categorized within the general framework of understanding pollutant transfer mechanisms at the bottom of a stormwater infiltration basin; more specifically, it focuses on the transfer of three heavy metals (zinc, lead and cadmium) in a fluvio-glacial deposit used as a support for various infiltration basins in the Lyon metropolitan area. The approach adopted relies on previous experimental studies and involves characterizing the retention and transfer of these three metals in the deposit, under both static conditions (closed reactor tests) and dynamic conditions (laboratory columns). A rigorous analysis of experimental results as well as a microanalysis enable proposing a set of retention mechanisms specific to the material matrix under study. Numerical modeling coupled with the calibration of high-quality experimental data have led to validating the suggested reaction mechanisms. From a purely scientific and methodological standpoint, this study illustrates the benefit of associating a detailed observation stage at a small scale (i.e. microanalysis) with numerical modeling techniques in order to fully understand reactive transfers taking place within porous media.
