Complementarity between production areas to ensure optimal supply of organic lambs along the year

Résumé

Even if it remains limited, the demand for organic sheep meat is a real one. In France, this production shows contrasting production calendars, with summer-autumn lamb production in the north and west areas, winter and spring production in the south. As we are considering here the long channels marketing, these regional specificities raise the question of the adequacy of the lamb supply to the demand of the sheep industry and leads to consider complementarities of supplies between regions throughout the year. On the basis of 11 typical farms in organic farming, contrasted in terms of organization of ewe reproduction and animal feeding, and distributed in these two large regions, we sought, by modeling, to determine the combination of these 11 farms which makes it possible to approach as closely as possible the demand throughout the year. By relaxing this constraint, we can introduce complementary objectives of maximizing the overall performance of the pool of farms, in economic terms (income), and from environmental (GHG and energy) and feed-food competition point of view. We show that it is not possible to reduce the deficit of the most deficient period (April) to less than 23% of the demand; this optimum resulted from the combination of 60% of farms in the North zone and 40% in the South. By "opening" the calendar matching constraint to 41% of the allowed deficit between supply and demand in April, we show that the global income increases by 51%, GHG emissions decrease by 15% and energy consumption by 6%, and that the feed-food competition improves by 14%. There is thus a tension between the demand of the sector and consumers for a regular production of lambs all year round on the one hand, and the economic interest of the producers and that of the community in environmental and social terms on the other. This work allows us to quantify these antagonisms and opens a discussion on possible solutions while pointing out the possible methodological advances in terms of optimization of the combination of production systems
