The royal lodgings at Amboise

Les logis royaux d'Amboise

Résumé

The synthesis of archival documents sheds fresh light ont the château of Amboise and enables to determine with accuracy the site of the royal lodgings in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The wide variety of arrangements makes Amboise a model for the typology of royal lodgings: superposed "appartements" in the keep (the king's lodgings lie above the queen's), coupled with a common room in the "logis des Sept Vertus", superposed again but this time with the floors inverted in the François Ier wing, and then on the same level in two parallel buildings. Undoubtedly one of the most disconcerting of these models is the extraordinary arrangement of the "logis des Sept Vertus" built by Charles VIII.
