Résumé

Most often, continuous records of flow rates in rivers are based on so-called 'rating curves', which are simple stage-discharge functions calibrated using directly measured stage-discharge data called 'gaugings'. Among other methods, Bayesian inference has recently emerged as a promising framework for establishing rating curves and for estimating the associated uncertainty rigorously. A methodology and the necessary tools (software BaRatin and its graphical interface BaRatinAGE) have been developed to assist in analysing stationary rating curves. The main advantage of the method stems from combining prior knowledge on hydraulic controls and gaugings with individual uncertainties. Some examples of results are presented for different hydrometric stations with varied stream sizes, nature of hydraulic controls, and abundance and quality of gaugings.
