Open innovation model refers to the ability for firms to openthemselves up to external networks and relationships in order to gain the fullpotential of their investments in innovation. The development of ICTs hasopened up new markets and ways of innovating. Today, platforms and Webservices represent the foundation on which relationships between firms areorganised. In this paper, we address the challenge of managing open innovationwithin business ecosystems, especially those aided by a new generation oftechnologies called Web services. We will draw lessons from Amazon.com tounderstand how this keystone organization is becoming adept at openinnovation, leveraging the power of its platform thanks to its Web servicespackage. The case study shows that by using Web services to enhancecollaboration in business ecosystems, some companies could support openinnovation and expand the value of the goods and services they deliver tocustomers. The paper concludes with a suggested research agenda dealing withthe significant implications for both strategy and policy.
