L’accord et sa dimension rituelle dans le confucianisme ancien

Résumé

In ancient China, the accord has occupied a primordial place in philosophical discourse, through a vocabulary whose main terms are he 和, the accord as a harmonious mixture of different elements, tong 同, the accord by assimilation, and shun 順, the dynamic accord, the act of following. This article aims to interpret the framework within which the accord is being developed. The value conferred on the very movement of “following”, “being in accord”, without a norm having been previously defined, implies first of all a strong distinction with conformation, so that accord in the field of inter-human relations – almost always hierarchical and political in the Confucian vision of the human world – does not become synonymous with obedience. However, to go beyond this negative grasp of the accord in ancient Confucian thought, by distinction with conformation, and taking into account the importance of ritual and musical practice and thought, it is necessary to turn to certain texts of ritual philosophy, which develop a conception of ritual success not as retribution (an expected result at the end of the ritual), but as the accord itself between the “parts” composing and/or performing the ritual. Finally, the question arises as to whether this notion of accord, deeply influenced by its ritualistic context, has a utopian horizon, a state of concord that would still go beyond the accord developed within ritualized inter-human relations.
