Consultation with Parents and Young Children and Traumatic Distress, an Alternative when Confronted by Difficulties in Mental Care
In medico-psycho-pedagogical centres and in child and adolescent psychiatry consultations we often encounter children who, as from kindergarten, cause concern to those around them due to their behaviour patterns. These latter often attest to interactive traumas tending to shatter any attempt at elaboration and hugely complicating any plans for care. For these children, for whom development in consultation of the conventional kind is hard to achieve, there is a need to work on the issues referring back to the first experiences of attachment and subjective appropriation around the parent-child bonds. Taking a case study of a parent-child consultation with a three-year-old girl, the authors, both clinical psychologists, put into perspective this work that involves following a path with both the parents and the child to gradually stage and recount the traumatic layers to the affair. It then becomes possible to conjure up a past that was hitherto shapeless to little by little open out to a symbolisation and thus to changes in the parent-child bonds.
