Horace, a poet of both the agreeable and the useful, writes all his work in the first person, with an authorial character seeking a fully human wisdom which must be invented from among the demands of the court and his own aspiration towards retirement. In this, he was a model for the Pléiade poets from the beginning of their careers to the upheaval of wartime. Just as important was the composition and development of a body of work in which a wide range of ethical positions, as well as their poetic expressions and forms, are presented and arranged.
