Les nécropoles phéniciennes de Méditerranée occidentale : questions d’identité
Résumé
Raising the question of the identity or the culture of a civilisation through the prism of burial grounds implies running into questions regarding the cultural isomorphism of a civilisation in terms of its funerary practices, as discussed in New and Post-processual archaeology. For the Phoenician burial grounds, many problems arise. First, the representativeness of the population: the question of the right to burial which, to this day, remains unknown. Second, the perception of social hierarchy which is seen in the burial grounds. Finally, the question of the identity of the Phoenician people who formed a part of this civilisation. Hence, focusing on selected examples of Phoenician burial grounds in the ancient western Mediterranean, we propose an introduction to these problems of identity and the resulting manifestations regarding the way in which the Phoenicians cared for their dead.
