Résumé

Physical inactivity, sedentary behavior and unbalanced diet are the main risk factors of non-communicable diseases as obesity. Both the general public and researchers are interested by the new information and communication technologies for different reasons: to look for information, to communicate, to acquire behavioral data. To study the effect of lifestyle on health parameters, the Human Nutrition Research Unit of INRA has developed new tools: WellBeNet app to collect data via a smartphone in free-living conditions (FLC) and the ActivCollector Web platform (https://activcollector.clermont.inra.fr/) to treat and store data. WellBeNet includes eMouve and NutriQuantic to evaluate both sedentary and physical activity levels and diet. eMouve assesses energy expenditure and time spent in immobility, light-, moderate- and vigorous- intensity activities from smartphone accelerometry data and from our scientifically validated and published algorithms. NutriQuantic collects the food portions and calculate a nutritional score. Twenty-two men (10 normal weight and 12 overweight, 34 y old) used WellBeNet for 5 days in FLC. The physical activity profiles were different according to BMI: the overweight men spent more time immobile than normal weight men (77% vs. 67% of the waking period). Contrariwise, light intensity activities were less popular in overweight (14%) than in normal weight individuals (23%, F = 3.7, p = 0.06). The mean total energy expenditure was significantly lower in overweight (33.3 kcal/kg/d) than in normal weight men (38.4 kcal/kg/d, F = 5.3 p=0.03). Surprisingly the number of food portions was similar between the two groups (13 and 14 portions/d). By minimizing the Euclidean norm ||Ax – b||², where A is the matrix of the portion repartition for each volunteer and b the energy expenditure, we estimated the energy intake of each food category (x). Then, we used a GLM procedure to compare the energy provided by the food categories in both groups. The energy intakes of meat-fish-egg and starchy food were higher in overweight men (676 vs. 471 kcal/d for meat-fish-egg products, F = 2.8, p = 0.10; 376 vs. 226 kcal/d for starchy foods, F = 5.3, p = 0.03). The portion size might depend on the body weight and BMI. Our scientific tool is powerful to study the lifestyles and discriminate behaviors according to individual and health characteristics. Objective measures and statistical estimations of behaviors have to be accurate to find relevant health or disease predictors.
