Form finding and design aspects of modular tensegrity arches
Résumé
Inspired by Snelson’s Rainbow Arch, we present in this paper a general approach to the form-finding of a family of tensegrity arches. From a pure geometrical generation by assembly of class-1 modules along a circular arc, a self stressed configuration is proposed by simulation of the tensioning process, by homogeneous activation of compressed elements. We demonstrate an application to this integrated approach with the design and construction of a 5 m span arch that took place during a structural morphology workshop on tensegrity structures.
