Semantic analyses of texts for eliciting and representing concepts: the TermCork project

Résumé

Working in Terminology implies recognizing its double dimension - it is both linguistic and conceptual. Thus, the terminological work relies not only on conceptualizations made by experts but also on the discourses they produce. Given that texts are undoubtedly vehicles for knowledge transfer, they should be processed according to their original purpose, namely the verbal transmission of knowledge in a context of specialized communication. In this communication, we present a reflection that results from the linguistic analysis of specialized texts in the field of cork. The methodology we shall thoroughly describe has allowed us to reach the following two conclusions that we will endeavour to demonstrate: i. texts are essential for the terminological work as long as they have been selected based on specific criteria; ii. texts lack the necessary information that would enable us to extrapolate from them to self-sufficient conceptual system proposals.
