From forced mobility to forced settlement? Syrian refugees' settlement process in Jordan
Résumé
Since the outbreak of the Syrian conflict in 2011, over 5 million refugees settled in neighbouring countries. While Lebanon refuses to open new official refugee camps, Jordan and Turkey decided to create refugee camps at their borders with Syria. However, at a regional level, less than 20% of the registered refugees reside in camps. I will analyse the settlement process of Syrian refugees in Northern Jordan in relation with their migratory itineraries (from their place of origin in Syria to their place of settlement in Jordan) and their mobility inside Jordan. The role of transnational networks connecting Syrians to Jordan will be analysed as a key factor to understand current spatial distribution of some refugee groups. This presentation is based on fieldwork since 2013 on Syrian refugees in Northern Jordan, and I will focus on two examples: Zaatari refugee camp and a neighbourhood in Azraq city.
