Analysis of dynamic multimodal user equilibrium for the single destination problem

Résumé

This paper presents analytical solutions for the dynamic user equilibrium problem on a single-destination network composed of three transportation alternatives: (i) private vehicle mode on a congested freeway, (ii) a public transit service with a guaranteed and fixed travel times, and (iii) a combined trip that starts with a private vehicle on the freeway and then switches to the transit service through intermodal stations located all along the corridor. Our solution method is exact and accounts for freeway congestion and the potential dwell times at intermodal stations. Based on the insights obtained with this analytical approach, a simplified solution method is proposed to streamline the calculations for more complex scenarios, and to analyze the effects of different design strategies on the social cost of the global transportation system.
