Résumé

The simulation of the structural dynamic response of vehicles (and other complex mechanical systems) has been puzzling engineers uninterruptedly for a long time. Worldwide competition ensures the need for a continuous development in our understanding of a wide variety of topics related to structural dynamics in industry. Depending on the frequency of interest, different modelling procedures have been established as industrial standards, such as the Finite Element Method for the low frequencies and Statistical Energy Analysis for the high frequency range. The medium frequency range however, poses a major problem and this industrial standard has not yet been well set. The scope of this presentation is to give a succinct overview of this particular problem for large size commercial airliners. The historical trend of commercial aviation shows a continuous increase in engine size in time, and therefore bigger dynamic forces and lower frequencies of rotation of the low pressure shaft. The understanding of full airplane dynamics beyond the limits of aeroelastic concerns is not only a must for the appropriate development of future aircraft but also to support research on reduction of cabin vibration for derivatives of the existing fleet; stretching the limits of validity for the current full airframe models automatically translates in better prediction for aircraft loads and comfort enhancement.
