A buoy designed to investigate the Mediterranean Sea
Résumé
The ultimate objective of the MELBA project is to build a low-cost multipurpose tool that is easy to operate, can transmit a very large amount of geo-referenced data, and can be deployed either in the open sea or (much likelier) near the coast, for instance by municipal administrations for periodic measurements of offshore pollution. The truly innovative feature of this project is the design and construction of a buoy capable of tracking any of the parameters (density, salinity, temperature, closed depth) calculated by measurements performed by its own sensor system. For example, the buoy can be kept in an area where the temperature is constant. A two-way communications system enables the buoy to transmit data and to receive instructions from a base on land or at sea.
