WIND-WAVE-POOL EXPERIMENTAL DATA OF CONTAMINATED SEAWATER SURFACES: STATISTICAL SURFACES AND RADAR BACKSCATTERED FIELD

This paper depicts an experiment on contaminated sea water
surfaces with measurements of surface geometrical properties
and radar backscattering estimations from X- to K-band.
These measurements are carried out in a sea water pool, the
wind waves are generated thanks to two fans. The observations
are realized by a radar system operating in near-field
and downwind configuration for various azimuth and incidence
angles and also by seven high-resolution capacitance
wave probes. Three pollutants are measured, colza oil, crude
oil and gas oil. Both of them reduce the surface radar cross
section compared to clean sea water configuration. Colza and
gas oils get a similar electromagnetic behaviour and the radar
cross section of the sea water surface contaminated by crude
oil is greater than the one considering a colza oil spill.
