Writing a foundation history : the foundation charters of La Bussière and the creation of collective memory in the diplomatic acts (1131 – c. 1170)
Two written documents bearing the date 1131 record the foundation of the Cistercian abbey
of La Bussière in Burgundy and are sometimes regarded as foundation charters. The first
attests to donations made by or through the agency of Gauthier of Sombernon. The second,
a chirograph, documents a complex exchange of properties with Saint-Vivant de Vergy,
which took place at Cîteaux in the presence of Duke Hugh II of Burgundy. A critical edition
and analysis of internal and external evidence (format, script, seal) demands a reassessment
of the date and role of these sources. The exchange charters were probably written in 1131
at Cîteaux, but were influenced by the monks of Saint-Vivant. The “foundation charter” of
Gauthier of Sombernon is, on the contrary, a spurious memorial narrative from the 1160s,
drawn up at La Bussière and validated by the Duke’s authority, in order to create an official
and coherent story of its origins and to justify the distraint of the abbey by the Sombernon
family.
