“This is the circle of the art world”: the value of digital repatriation in Australia and beyond
Résumé
The first part of the title is taken from a filmed interview Dr Gumbula and Jessica conducted in France in July 2007, during one of his ARC funded research trips, to respond to an enquiry that was made by a sceptical European curator who wanted to know why he sought to have the materials back. Was it because the Yolngu had lost their culture? Jessica will draw on his long response to outline his pioneering perspective on museum collaborations and to address the idea of value in digital repatriation. Rather than fixing things on computers, repatriation processes should be seen as modern pathways, which by linking indigenous pasts to present and future visions, enable a renewed performance of culture.
