Monitoring of concrete structures with optical fiber sensors, In: Eco-efficient Repair and Rehabilitation of Concrete Infrastructures, Chapitre 5

Résumé

This chapter addresses the use of distributed optical fibers for the monitoring of concrete structures. After overviewing optical fiber technologies, we propose a practical guide to select the appropriate optical fiber system for a given monitoring purpose, such as for crack detection or strain measurements. It is noted that optical fibers can be used to detect and localize structural damages. To quantify the damage, which is valuable for structural managers, we recommend combining optical fiber outputs with a mechanical model. Some significant applications are presented in this chapter.
