Hash Based Message Authentication in Vehicular Delayed Tolerant Networks

Résumé

The recent advances in wireless technologies lead to a large use of intelligent communications in various fields. Taking advantages of these technological progresses, vehicle manufacturers and roadside infrastructure makers have recognized an opportunity to improve the transport security and efficiency using vehicles to vehicles and vehicles to roadside infrastructure communications. Thus intelligent transportation systems (ITS) rely on the collaboration between various entities involved in the complex and multimodal transportation systems that irrigate our cities. However, in an early stage of the ITS deployment, limited communication connectivity is expected and thus security protections also need to be developed while considering such unreliable communication environments rather than considering only the one-hop communications or Internet-based routing. In this paper, we consider a vehicular delay tolerant network (VDTN) as a possible network environment. Then, we introduce a hash based message authentication designed for VDTNs. In the paper, two different message authentication schemes are introduced: hash chain based message authentication and hash tree based message authentication. Our main contribution based on these techniques, which is presented in this article.
