La prophétie dans l’hagiographie latine du haut Moyen Âge (VIe-IXe siècle). L’histoire comme destin, prédestination et providence

Résumé

Only a matter of time. Fate, predestination and the providence in Latin hagiography (6th-9th)Latin hagiography is usually described as a medieval mode of the writing of history; nevertheless, it appears as a very peculiar way of historical writing, for hagiographical texts not only refer to a shared memory of the past lives of holy men and women, but also pretend that these people were able to disclose future events – actually even events that the audience was still expecting and not obviously foreseeable ones. Therefore, to scrutinize the use of prophecy in hagiography is an excellent way of understanding the particular relationship these medieval texts maintain with history – a Christian history believed to be the place where the Lord's plans are noticeable; and how they suggest, or argue for, an abolition of past and future for saints who already live with God. Even if the weight of Biblical models must not be underrated, some hagiographical texts can be read as yet unseen evidences for a medieval deep thinking on a very specific problem of Christian faith, that continuously unsettle the Early Middle Ages : how the freedom of the person is articulated with the prescience of the Almighty – a question addressed through the notions of fate, predestination and the providence.
