Using Colored Petri Nets for Verifying RESTful Service Composition

Abstract

RESTful services are an attractive technology for designing and developing web-based applications, as they facilitate reuse, interoperability, and loosely coupled interaction with generic clients (typically web browsers). Building RESTful service composition has received much interest to satisfy complex user requirements. However, verifying the correctness of a composition remains a tedious task. In this paper, we present a formal approach based on Colored Petri Nets (CPNs) to verify RESTful service composition. First, we show how CPNs are utilized for modeling the behavior of resources and their composition. Then, we present how this formal model can be used to verify relevant composition behavior properties. Our solution is illustrated with a scenario built upon an energy management web framework developed within the HIT2GAP H2020 European project (http://www.hit2gap.eu/)
