Broadening and diversification of hunted resources, from the Late Palaeolithic to the Late Mesolithic, in the North and East of France and the bordering areas

Anne Bridault

Résumé

The paper deals with the issue of shifts in subsistence during the Epipalaelithic- Mesolithic period, based on a diachronic analysis of 60 faunal spectra. The assemblages come from sites located in the North, East of France and bordering areas (Switzerland, Germany and Luxembourg). Some Ertebølle assemblages from Scania are also included for comparison. - A quantitative analysis is carried out on the macrofaunal data. Two criterions are used for comparison : taxonomic richness and diversity or evenness. They are measured by quantitative indices unrelated to sample sizes, and comparisons are controled with statistical tests. It appears that neither broadening of prey spectrum, nor chronological diversification (from Late Palaeolithic to Late Mesolithic) occured in the study area. - A qualitative analysis focuses on birds, fishes, amphibians and micromammals data, species likely to have been food supplies. Results are more subtle : no intensification of birds occurence is observed in our regions, during the periods considered. Bird predation seems to be a random, generalised and probably opportunistic foraging. An increase in the occurence of fishes, amphibians and micromammals is observed between the early stages and the late stage.
