« David of Sassoon, symbol of national awakening and symbol of freedom : his image under socialist realism »
Two very different paths illustrate the calvary of two Armenian artists, Hakob Kojoyan (1883-1959) and Ervand Kotchar (1899-1979), under the regime of Stalin. With no political ambition, but armed with projects and artistic claims, they integrate Soviet Armenia in 1923 and 1936 respectively and immediately become trapped into political situations that went way beyond their artistic convictions. Under unbelievable circumstances the David of Sassoun theme accompanies them all along this period. This hero of the Armenian epic, which incarnated in the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century the idea of national awakening and freedom, is often used by Soviet ideologues as a hero of the class struggle or the destruction of the ancient world. But for these two artists, he has become an ideal of man’s freedom and justice, so much desired in these troubled times.
