Résumé

Our model explains the possible phenology of badly known stages of P. melanarius with and without farming activity. The results presented here demonstrate how the capacity of instars to be spared by farming practices is the key factor of coexistence between farming and beneficial carabid beetles, as previously suggested by Lövei and Sunderland (1996). This is highly conditioned by the dates of the farming calendar, the intensity of the farming practices and the presence of shelter zones. Rich in hedges in earlier times, several European landscapes have however undergone widespread eradication of hedgerows in recent decades. With land consolidation, the widespread eradication of grassy field margins has proceeded rather unnoticed, compared with the more conspicuous hedges (Kromp, 1999). Maintaining and managing uncultivated habitats like hedgerows or grass margins is thus as crucial for carabid beetles as managing cultivated fields.
