Macbeth's Gunpowder at the Cartoucherie: Translating the Sensation of Crime

Résumé

In Macbeth, William Shakespeare emphasizes both the intensity of sensation and the confusion of the senses. This paper examine how this distortion and discord between the senses was translated on stage in the Theatre du Soleil’s 2014 production of Macbeth. After outlining the sensory landscape of the play and its realization in the history of the play’s production, I present its embodiment under Ariane Mnouchkine’s direction, and examine ways in which the discord between the senses is translated in her production, both verbally and physically.
