Effets de l'ajout de noyaux fonctionnels dans un aliment nouveau sur la prise alimentaire du porc sevré au cours d'une transition alimentaire

Résumé

When exposed to a novel food during food transition, decreased voluntary food intake is often reported in pigs and causes impaired growth. The aim of the present study was to identify functional nuclei (composed of various essential oil mixtures and other plant extracts) that were likely to improve food intake during food transitions. In Experiment 1, 12 juvenile female pigs were subjected to two‐choice feeding tests to investigate their preferences regarding 4 experimental diets composed of a familiar grower diet, with different functional nuclei (N1, N2, N3 or N4) added at predefined concentrations. The analysis of individual and collective consumption and preferences made it possible to identify the N1 and N3 nuclei as the best candidates for Experiment 2. In Experiment 2, the spontaneous food intake of 24 juvenile female pigs was assessed during a food transition. After 9 days during which they were fed a familiar starter diet, the pigs were divided into 3 experimental groups and fed an unfamiliar grower diet, with the addition of either the N1 nucleus or the N3 nucleus, or with no additive at all (control). Although the adjunction of nuclei to the novel diet did not increase food intake or weight gain in these particular experimental conditions, it was likely to maintain normal consumption on the day of the food transition, unlike the control diet. Further investigations in chronic or acute stress conditions might make it possible to potentiate the positive effects of these nuclei on food intake during food transitions.
