The temperature effects of pulsed magnetic field on the directional solidification

Résumé

The pulsed magnetic fields (PMF) with magnetic intensities of 0.129~0.35 Tesla were respectively applied to two kinds of alloys of hypoeutectic Al-7% Si and eutectic Al-11.5% Si during directional solidification at the drawing rate of 130 μm/s. The influence of PMF on temperature gradients and the relative position of Solid/Liquid interface were investigated. The experimental results show that the temperature gradient ahead of solidifying interface was increased, and the width of mushy region in Al-7% Si alloy was decreased, and that the relative position of S/L interface in the Al-11.5% Si was dropped when the PMF was applied. The analysis suggested that the PMF would create more Joule heat in the liquid phase than that in solid phase, which effect will decrease the region of constitutional undercooling.
