Linguistics or stylistics? Remarks on the translation of lexical anaphora from French into English and other associated phenomena

Résumé

In the following paper I would like to look at how a difference between French and English at the level of the linguistic system – the system of pronouns, to be precise – may affect our translation practices and entail possibly unanticipated repercussions in a number of different areas. Beyond the immediate question of translation, however, it is worth asking to what degree such differences – however familiar they may be to us – actively participate in the stylistic constraints of a language or contribute to fashion speakers' cognitive representations.
