Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with Daily Mindfulness Training: a Case Report of Comorbid Binge Eating and Bipolar Disorders

Résumé

Binge eating and mood disorders are highly comorbid, but psychological therapies solely target on one or the other. The current clinical case report aims to describe one application of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with mindfulness training for binge eating and bipolar disorders. Treatment in a 49-year-old female consisted of 12 weekly individual CBT sessions with daily mindfulness training. Progress in treatment was assessed and monitored every four weeks via validated eating behavior, depression, anxiety, impulsivity, and motivation towards therapy measures. The patient reported increased eating and cognitive impulsivity, decreased number of binge episodes, and increased psychological flexibility. Due to mood alteration, the results showed a negative association between depressive symptoms and motivational regulation. Daily mindfulness training, including psychoeducation and a positive therapeutic alliance, can be applied to obese patients with psychiatric disorders underlying their eating disorders.
