Design of supercritical composite helicopter driveshafts: theoretical and experimental study

Résumé

This work deals with the sizing of supercritical laminated composite drive shaft. We present the dynamic study of a hollow drive shaft mounted on viscoelastic supports. This study reveals a stability criterion which highlights the destabilizing effect of internal damping. We validate this behaviour by supercritical tests. The second part discussed about the tube strength in torsion (buckling of thin tubes; torsional strength). Lastly, composite supercritical drive shafts examples are presented. This study reveals the interest of high modulus carbon fibres.
