Statistical Modeling of the Echo Envelope and its Relation with Scatterers Spatial Organization in the Context of Ultrasound Blood Aggregation

Résumé

A mixture of homodyned K-distributions corresponding to a mixture if tissue microstructures was adopted to model the echo envelope of ultrasound RF data, together with an estimation method of its parameters. This model was shown to be identifiable; i.e., its parameters can be retrieved uniquely from echo envelope data in a region of interest (ROI). The mean intensity of this mixture model was correlated to the structure factor previously introduced to quantify the spatial organization of red blood cells (RBC) from the backscattering coefficient (BSC) in the context of erythrocyte aggregation. For this purpose, an ultrasound scanner equipped with a wide-band 25 MHz probe was used to insonify porcine blood sheared in a Couette device with different attenuation coefficients. This correlation was also derived theoretically. Moreover, the coherent signal power, another echo envelope statistical parameter based on mixtures of homodyned K-distributions, was set into correspondence with a statistic of the demodulated in-phase and quadrature (IQ) signal on the in-vitro data. Furthermore, it was shown empirically and theoretically that the coherent signal power depends on the spatial organization of scatterers. These preliminary results constitute a further step in relating echo envelope statistical parameters with spectral analysis parameters in quantitative ultrasound.
