Résumé

This article goes back to the question of Cardinal d’Acquasparta’s tomb in Santa Maria in Aracoeli, mainly studied for attributions problems until today. The monument has probably been damaged by works in the North transept between the 14th and the 17th century. The lower parts must have been modified whilst the transept was raised in the last third of the 16th century and it surely lost an inscription at that time. Hypotheses about these changes have been given (by R. Carloni), but they are not convincing. In order to better understand the monument, we need to focus on the North transept’s disposition at the beginning of the 14th century, in which time we suppose there was an altar in front of the tomb. Until now, historians have tried to solve attribution questions which do not lead to interesting conclusions because of the lack of comparative elements. For chronological and stylistical reasons, the fresco can be attributed to Cavallini. The sculpture can be attributed to Giovanni di Cosma because the monument is very similar to two other monuments signed by him. The inferior quality is not contradictory, as two monuments signed by Giovanni di Cosma differ stylistically. This rather shows a workshop organisation. Although the commission is not documented, Rome’s first Franciscan church has obviously been chosen in relation with Matteo d’Acquasparta’s religious order and with the mendicant churchs’ success as burial place. The patron very probably suggested Boniface VIII’s tomb as a model to the sculptor since Matteo d’Acquasparta and this pope were particularly close.
