Towards a resilience approach of spatial systems
The concept of resilience has its origins in physics, but has been particularly developed in ecology. It implies the capacity of a system to integrate a perturbation in its functionning, without changing its qualitative structure. In this article it is aimed at an application of this notion and its conceptual framework, to a particular geographical problem setting that is the dynamics of the spatial systems.
The perennity of a system in the long term is analysed in different ways according to the research domains and the purposes. In geography one relevant question is the temporal stability of spatial structures. If they are maintained through perturbed periods, it supposes that they have a capacity to be resilient. The aim is to explore the possibilities to adapt the concept of resilience from ecological issues to geographical problem settings.
