EVREST Deliverables 7.1 and 8.4 : Final report

Résumé

EVREST aimed at an integrated concept design and assessment for an EREV in order to overcome some of the BEV limitations such as the high purchase price and the limited range. Nevertheless, the addition of new components such as an additional ICE or a fuel cell usually results in additional cost. For a success on potential markets, it is important to optimize the EREVs in terms of the size of both the battery and the RE. Consequently, we aimed at an EREV concept which takes account of users' travel behavior and travelers' mobility requirements, the optimization of purchase costs, the minimization of the environmental impact, and the energy production. For an evaluation of the EREV concept, an improved understanding of the users' perspective and their requirements was a crucial element, particularly when considered against the background of car markets. Thus, it was essential to identify favorable factors for as well as hindering aspects to the acceptance of EREVS on markets so as to determine possible levers of action to encourage consumers to adopt EREVs. As the EREV can be understood as a solution which combines the advantages of the BEV in general (i.e. less pollution, less noise in urban areas and, for the case the electricity is generated using renewable energy, a significant potential to reduce greenhouse gases) with the advantages of the conventional multi-purpose vehicle with a combustion engine (i.e. long range, very fast refueling, flexibility in terms of user requirements) the conclusions as follows will therefore mainly focus on the comparison of an EREV against a BEV on the one side and against the ICEV on the other.
