The possibility of using non-qualified clay-rich sand by overview the standard (methylene blue test), mineralogy of aggregates, and engineering behavior

Résumé

The natural aggregates from quarry are getting exhausting due to the demanding from bloomed construction. We are able to save the natural resource if we do count both the accuracy of standard and the performance of engineering behavior. The study aims to overview the limitation and the uncertain parameters of European standard, methylene blue test (EN 933-9), for qualifying the fine in sand fraction. Besides, the interaction between bitumen and clay, and the engineering behaviors of clay-rich asphalt concrete (AC) are also inspected. The kaolinite, illite and montmorillonite, which are minerals commonly presenting in quarries, were taken account of the contribution of clay-rich sand aggregate, in order to estimate the applicability by various clay properties. The result shows methylene blue test poorly indicates the water sensitivity of bitumen-clay bonding because of various clay properties. Therefore, a mineralogical analysis of clay-rich aggregates has to be considered as a compensated method beside MB test.
