Unrelated parallel-machine scheduling with optional maintenance activity on each machine and general effects of deterioration

Résumé

Simultaneously scheduling jobs and preventive maintenance attract more and more researchers. In this paper, we introduce a general model for unrelated parallel-machine scheduling problems with deteriorating effects. Each machine has at most one maintenance activity during the planning horizon, we assume that the machine returns to its initial conditions after a maintenance activity and the duration of maintenance is a linear function of the running time. We present a general approach to solve this model under several performance criteria and we provide a polynomial time algorithm for the problem if the number of machines is fixed. We also give a more effcient solution algorithm for several special cases of the model.
