La transition bimembranées/unimembranées : une révolution au royaume des bactéries ?

Abstract

According to the current paradigm in microbiology, the old prokaryotes/eukaryotes dichotomy is supposed to be obsolete and the living world should rather be divided into three fundamentally different domains: Bacteria, Archaea and Eucarya. Several authors have however contested this vision of systematics for several years. Their work seems now to converge in the direction of an alternative phylogeny thanks to the contribution of several independent lines of evidence. This controversy is complicated by the superposition of an old taxonomic conflict on the attitude to adopt about paraphyly. It presents nonetheless interesting implications about the nature of the Last Universal Common Ancestor (LUCA), and also about the origin of life itself. As a consequence, the confirmation of this new shape of the tree of life could make rejection of all paraphyletic groups practically untenable.
