Sustainable rural development : exploring multifunctionality of agricultural livelihoods in senegal river valley

Résumé

Sustainable rural development in developing country is enhanced by subsistence agriculture and rural livelihoods. However, these livelihoods are particularly vulnerable to socio-environmental changes. For instance in African semi-arid environments, floodplains are attractive and productive areas, providing agro-ecological conditions for many rural livelihoods (fishing, flood-recession agriculture, irrigation...). In Senegal river valley (SRV), socio-environmental changes (hydrological, water management, development of irrigation, increase of population,...) affected rural livelihoods. Today most households follow a livelihood diversification strategy using different agro-ecological units in a village area, but all activities use a single water resource: the river. This paper explores sustainability of livelihoods and water use in SRV. To evaluate how diversification can create sustainable development in floodplain agro-ecosystem, this work used a multidimensional approach. Methodology is inspired by both sustainable livelihoods and multifunctionality frameworks. Economical, social, ecological and food security indicators were selected to quantify livelihood assets use and outcomes on a village scale. Data were collected during fieldworks in 2012 and 2013 in SRV. Key informants and household interviews were conducted in four villages with various geographical locations. Preliminary findings suggest that each livelihood provides a particular function at the level of a village. Modern livelihoods, as irrigated agriculture, have an economic role while traditional agriculture provides ecological and food security functions. Combining different livelihoods limit shocks of production losses (insect or birds destruction) or impossibility to cultivate (lack of water resources, problems of debts).
