Apports de l'électroencéphalographie à la compréhension de la mémoire

Résumé

The neural activity underlying memory processes has been extensively studied through electro-encephalography (EEG) techniques. With the ability to directly assess neural correlates of cognitive processes, EEG studies have provided useful insights into the organization and functioning of memory. The objective of this review is to summarize these EEG findings that illustrate central features of memory processes. We will first detail how EEG indices allow to quantitatively assess the active cognitive processes involved in each phase of memory: encoding, maintenance and retrieval. We will especially focus on the interplay between these indices and the features and outcome of a memory task. In the second part, we will demonstrate how EEG findings support a modular approach of memory, and contribute to the identification of both general and task-specific processes. This part will center on three task-specific features: the presence of semantic demands, the type of to-be-remembered material, and the type of retrieval task. Thirdly, we will present EEG studies aiming to identify new processing stages in memory on the basis of their neural correlates. We will discuss the existence of specific processing stages before the presentation of a to-be-remembered stimulus, before and after retrieval, and during retrieval itself. In the final section, we will review the main limitations of the EEG approach of memory and mark a few directions for future studies using electrophysiology.
