GPS observables in general relativity
Résumé
I review the motivations and the main ideas that have lead to the introduction of relativistic positioning systems in the form of the so called “GPS” variables. These variables allow us to define a gauge invariant metric, and a gauge-invariant notion of length, curvature... in the context of general relativity. I show explicitly how the metric can be measured locally.
