Optimal Control of Rotor Systems Using Linear Matrix Inequalities

Résumé

In recent years, a number of new methods dedicated to acoustic and vibration attenuation have been developed aiming at handling several problems in engineering applications. This is mostly due to two important characteristics found in modern mechanical systems, namely their low weight (highly flexible) and high performance, as found in space structures, for example. There are various types of actuators available for control. The present contribution is dedicated to the electromagnetic actuator (EMA) in the context of rotor dynamics. EMA uses electromagnetic forces to control the rotor without mechanical contact. The model of the system was reduced by using the so-called balanced realization technique. Then, it was possible to organize the modes of the system so that only the main modes (with respect to the dynamic behavior of the system) are considered. The performance of an active vibration control depends on the employed control technique. Here, a feedback technique is used and the controller gain is obtained by using the linear quadratic regulator (LQR) approach that is solved by Linear Matrix Inequalities. The LMI is a very useful tool for problems in which constraints have to be taken into account, where the parameters vary in a range of values. Once formulated in terms of LMI, a control problem can be solved efficiently by convex optimization algorithms. State observers were used to estimate a few states of the system since it is not practical from the experimental view point to measure all the states of the system. The design of the state observers was performed by using LMIs. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology conveyed
