Rockglacier movements detection by Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar D-InSAR in French Alps using ERS (European Remote Sensing) archive data

Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (D-InSAR) is a method of measurement based on the phase difference between two radar images that allow the detection and quantification of ground surface deformation. Recent research has shown that the D-InSAR technics can be used to quantify rockglacier deformation. In this study, we are interested in the detection of rockglacier movements in the French Alps. We used ERS (European Remote Sensing) archive data and chose the more relevant of them following criteria which are: (i) parameters related to the geometry and positioning of satellites during data acquisition and (ii) meteorological and topographical parameters. To analyse this amount of data, two methods were employed: (i) an empirical analysis of interferograms based on topographic data in a GIS and (ii) a comparison between interferograms and two existing rockglaciers inventories. At the end, a map of the French Alps with all detected rockglacier movements was edited.
