Résumé
The nineteenth International Geological Congress took place in Algiers inSeptember, 1952. It was attended by more than 1 100 members. In this paper,answers are given to some questions : 1° how was settled the designation ofAlgiers? 2° how, at that time, were organized geological activities in French NorthAfrica? 3° what was the role of the Organizing Committees ; 4° what was thenumerical importance of the main national delegations ? 5° how went off themeetings of the Congress Council and those of the fifteen thematic sections ?Additionally, information is given about the geological cruise of the ship" Champollion " along the Algerian and Tunisian coasts and the numerousexcursions organized throughout North Africa, Sahara and even West Africa.Finally, the congress gave an opportunity for editing many publications testifying tothe progress made at that time by the geological knowledge of the Maghrebcountries.
Le dix-neuvième Congrès géologique international tenu à Alger en septembre1952, a réuni plus de 1100 participants. Des réponses sont données à quelquesquestions : 1° comment fut-il décidé que ce congrès se tiendrait à Alger ? 2°comment était alors organisée la géologie en Afrique du Nord ? 3° quel rôlejouèrent les comités d'organisation ? 4° quelle fut l'importance numérique desdélégations nationales ? 5° comment se déroulèrent les réunions du Conseil duCongrès, et celles des quinze sections thématiques. En outre, sont évoquées lacroisière géologique du paquebot " Champollion " le long des côtes algéro-tunisiennes et les nombreuses excursions dans toute l'Afrique du Nord et même enAfrique occidentale. Le congrès permit enfin d'éditer de nombreuses publicationsqui témoignèrent des progrès réalisés à cette date dans la connaissancegéologique de l'Afrique du Nord.
