Experimental and predicted excess molar volumes and enthalpies of binary systems containing furan

Résumé

Lignocellulosic biomass refers to plant biomass that is composed of lignin and cellulose (wood residues, cereal straw and forestry waste). This biomass is playing a major role in the chemical sectors as a substitution material. The thermodynamic behaviour of molecules associated with the conversion of these bio-resources is poorly understood but is of importance for the design and the development of new processes. In this paper, we focus on the furan as a derived molecule. To the best of our knowledge, no data are available in the open literature; as a result, a study of some thermodynamic properties has been initiated for the binary systems of furan with n-hexane, toluene or 1-Octanol. The volumic mass of pure compounds and of binary liquid mixtures has been measured from 303.15 K up to 383.15 K for pressures up to 2 MPa with an Anton Paar vibrating-tube densimeter DMA HPM. Excess molar volumes were calculated from experimental data and fitted using the Redlich-Kister polynomial equation. The excess molar enthalpies for binary mixtures cited above were obtained at three temperatures ranging from 313.15 to 383.15 K. The measurements were performed using a customized flow mixing unit adapted to the BT215 calorimeter, manufactured by SETARAM Instrumentation France. The experimental results are represented and correlated using a Redlich-Kister type equation. Modelling of the excess enthalpies has been performed using the UNIFAC molecular group-contribution method.
